The South African Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is a stunning architectural landmark. The design incorporates elements that symbolize the rich history and architecture of Ethiopia, while also featuring nods to South African cultural influences. The complex consists of a main chancery building, staff recreation center, and staff residences.
Located on a busy street corner, the design is largely introverted, featuring internal atriums and courtyards that provide privacy and natural light and ventilation for the various diplomatic functions that take place there. The exterior of the building is clad in local pink granite and a type of stone abundant in Addis Ababa, with black Zimbabwean granite used as accents.
